When DIY works
For genuinely simple, low-stakes legal needs, DIY works. Filing your own LLC formation with state-provided online forms (most states have them free). A simple will when your estate has no tax exposure and no contested heirs. A landlord-tenant dispute under $500 where small claims court resolves it.

When DIY fails — and how
The failure mode of DIY is invisible until the consequences land. A few examples we see regularly:
